Frank H. Stewart Collection

Identifier: MSS 001

The Frank H. Stewart Collection is a large amalgam of documents, correspondence, business records, objects, and more, accumulated by Philadelphia-area businessman Frank H. Stewart. Stewart was owner of an electrical supply manufacturing outfit located in Philadelphia. He was a native of Salem County, NJ, and retired to Woodbury, NJ, fairly early in his life. He was an amateur historian and long-time president of the Gloucester County Historical Society. Stewart was an inveterate collector who amassed this collection of documents regarding the First U.S. Mint (the site of his electrical manufacturing business); the Native American populations of southern New Jersey and the greater Delaware Valley; land deeds from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries which depict a wide geographical region, including southern New Jersey and England; Stewart's own personal and business dealings; papers and research notes on many of southern New Jersey's historic sites and house museums; papers of local prominent people and families, including Samuel Mickle's diaries and ledgers, the Howell family, the Innskeep family, and several others; and a large collection of photographs and glass plate negatives made by Stewart himself. This collection is currently undergoing processing.
